Carole Pateman's research and publications in political
theory have covered a number of social and political theorists,
including feminist thinkers in the early modern period.
Beginning with graduate study, her work has centered on
Democratic theory, questions about citizenship and feminist
political theory. In recent years, she has also developed an
interest in political theorists' contribution to the debate
regarding the status of animals.
Her most recent research has been concerned with historical
and contemporary aspects of democratization, citizenship and
rights. Her work is widely read across a number of disciplines
in the social sciences and humanities, including law, and has
been translated into several languages.
